China suspends AJC International, Intervision foods
Atlanta Business Chronicle
China has suspended meat imports from several American meat and poultry processors, including two from Georgia, claiming the companies are shipping tainted food products.
According to the newspaper China Daily, Atlanta-based AJC International Inc. and Atlanta-based Intervision Foods were both part of the suspension. China's government has given AJC International 45 days to "get their products in order," the newspaper said. Intervision Foods' suspension time is unclear.
Other U.S. companies suspended include Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE: TSN), Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., Triumph Foods and Sanderson Farms Inc. (NASDAQ: SAFM).
China claims the suspended American meat providers sent products containing salmonella, feed additives and veterinary drugs, China Daily reported.
The suspension comes after the United States recently banned three types of farm-raised fish from China until the Chinese companies could confirm their products do not have harmful residues. The United State also recently discovered harmful chemicals in low-cost brands of toothpaste made in China and sold in U.S. discount stores.
