In an effort to battle sinking attendance, the Georgia Aquarium has inked a deal with Premier Exhibitions Inc. to bring in an exhibit about the Titanic.
RMS Titanic Inc., a unit of Atlanta-based traveling exhibitions firm of Premier Exhibitions (NASDAQ: PRXI) will debut on Aug. 22 at the Georgia Aquarium “Titanic: Aquatic.” The exhibition about the history of the ill-fated ship includes more than 190 artifacts recovered from Titanic's debris field, including 40 objects never before seen by the public.
Titanic: Aquatic at the Georgia Aquarium is slated to run for about nine months. Adult tickets are $31.50 and children’s tickets are $23.50.
“Georgia Aquarium tells the stories of our oceans, not just the aquatic life that teems within, but the incredible journeys we as people have taken across our seas,” said Carey Rountree, Georgia Aquarium’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “No aquatic story is more compelling than that of the 'unsinkable' ship, Titanic.”
The world’s biggest aquarium on Aug. 5 announced a major restructuring in the wake of dropping attendance. The aquarium had 3.5 million visitor’s in 2006, its first year. But attendance dropped 25 percent to 2.6 million in 2007 and about 2.2 million are expected in 2008.
