Tech exec Howle pulling for Clemson’s success

Atlanta Business Chronicle - by John Manasso

On Aug. 30, technology executive C. Tycho Howle will watch his alma mater, Clemson University, open the season at the Georgia Dome against Alabama, in a football game fraught with high expectations.

Win or lose, Howle, who has donated $2.5 million to Clemson, knows he will have done his best to help the university reach its stated goal of becoming one of the top 20 public universities in the country. He has endowed two chairs to assist in computer research.

Howle is the founder, chairman and CEO of nuBridges Inc., which manufactures software and delivers managed services that protect sensitive data.

A native of Lancaster, S.C., Howle received his undergraduate degree in physics and master’s degree in systems engineering — both from Clemson. He has done plenty of fundraising in the past for Clemson, including a program to increase giving by young alumni by offering matching funds.

The Atlantan said he feels he owes much of what he has accomplished to Clemson.

“One of the things I’ve tried to do is to help Clemson achieve some of the goals it’s got that will help it improve its status,” Howle said.

He credited the leadership of President James Barker with moving Clemson steadily up the national rankings. He said when Barker took over, Clemson ranked about 60th. U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 rankings put Clemson at No. 22 in the national public university category.

“It helps us attract better-qualified professors but it also helps us fund the research,” Howle said. “[It] helps us be a highly rated research university.”

Howle made the donation through his family foundation, which has made more than 400 grants. Organizations to which the foundation has made gifts include the Atlanta Union Mission and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he is a trustee.

One of the chairs that Howle endowed is for a computing school director. That position was filled on July 1 by Larry Hodges, who had founded Georgia Tech’s Visualization Center and also chaired University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s computer science department.

“It’s a tremendous advantage for Clemson in that we have all engineering and physical disciplines in one college,” said Dean Esin Gulari. “ ... It enables tremendous opportunities for us, certainly for research but also for our young.”

Dewberry joins Childrens

Elisabeth Dewberry, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle’s former campaign manager, has joined Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as a senior development officer within the foundation.

Dewberry will be the point person for the hospital’s initiative toward a statewide wellness program and will concentrate on generating dollars from corporate, legislative, foundation, individual and event-based sources.

She also served as executive director of the Tour de Georgia, which raised $400,000 for Children’s Healthcare.

Partners for camp

Camp Twin Lakes, a camp for children with serious illnesses and other life challenges, announced that as of Sept. 25 its 2008 Partners Cards will be available — a program that raised $340,000 last year.

Last year the camp sold 4,600 cards. This year’s price is $60.

The card entitles the holder to a 20 percent discount at participating stores and restaurants, including Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, Restoration Hardware, Lola, New York Prime, Alon’s and South City Kitchen.

Isakson, Williams host gala

U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson will be the honorary chair and John and Nancy Williams will act as gala chairs for the first anniversary gala of the Cobb Energy Centre.

The event will be Sept. 13 at The Mansion on Peachtree. Individual tickets are $600. The night also will feature an 8:30 p.m. concert featuring Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Concert prices range from $39 to $104.
