Zaxby’s closes only Ohio store

Athens, Ga.-based Zaxby’s Franchising Inc. shuttered its first and only Ohio store, in Columbus near Ohio State University, after just six months.
“Unfortunately, despite strong system-wide sales, this restaurant has not delivered the sales and growth that we expect, so we’ve elected to close it,” the company said in an e-mail. “While Zaxby’s has no immediate plans to open new locations in Ohio, we continue to seek growth opportunities in existing and new markets.”
The company had planned to expand into Cincinnati and Dayton.
The 3,640-square-foot Columbus store was more than a market test for the business – it was a design test as well. It was the only location in the 450-unit chain in a strip center. All others are freestanding units.
The quick-casual chain’s claim to fame is its 24-hour-marinated, hand-breaded, fried-at-order chicken products, most notably chicken fingers. Zaxby’s, which started in 1990, is regarded as one of the restaurant industry’s fastest-growing chains, hitting 300 units in 2005, 400 in 2007 and surpassing 450 this year.
