Bendoraitis to head Comair
Atlanta Business Chronicle
Comair has tapped John Bendoraitis, former head of Compass Airlines, to replace John Selvaggio as president of the commuter airline.
Selvaggio, who left a three-year retirement to head Comair in 2007, is retiring once again, according to a news release. Selvaggio took the helm of Comair, a unit of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL), in the fall 2007. In that time, he has helped steer his company through historically bumpy conditions as Delta raised prices, charged for amenities and cut its reliance on 50-seat jets, causing Comair to switch to larger aircraft.
“John’s steady hand has been critical in leading Comair through one of the most difficult years for the industry,” said Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delta Connection, in the release.
Bendoraitis, a 25-year airline industry veteran, began his career at Northwest Airlines as a maintenance technician and technical instructor in 1984. He held a number of managerial positions at the Eagan, Minn.-based airline before joining Compass, a Chantilly, Va,-based commuter carrier that is a Northwest subsidiary. Bendoraitis earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Metropolitan State University and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas.
Delta and Northwest (NYSE: NWA) are in the process of merging, a move that will create the world’s largest airline, with headquarters in Atlanta.
Comair employs 5,800 and operates 511 daily flights to 77 destinations in the U.S. and overseas.
