Ritz: Digital goes disposable
Baltimore Business Journal - by Jeff Clabaugh Contributor
Beltsville-based Ritz Camera says it is the first photo chain to nationally launch a fully digital disposable camera. It'll sell for about $11.
Ritz says the throw-away camera will have many of the features of more expensive digital cameras including the ability to delete unwanted photos, automatic flash and timer.
The combination brings together two of the fastest-growing segments in photography. According to the Photo Marketing Association, single-use cameras have grown more than 15 percent a year over the last five years and now represent about 19 percent of film rolls processed. Digital camera sales have grown 23 percent in the past year and will represent almost a third of all consumer photography by the end of the year.
Despite the popularity of digital cameras, only 19 percent of digital pictures are printed.
Ritz says it introduced Dakota Digital Camera at stores in Washington, Baltimore and 12 other markets beginning July 28. The digital photos can be transferred to CDs and turned into prints at Ritz locations and at its Wolf Camera stores.
